Tankers Transfers Cargo from Arctic LNG-2 via STS

LNG

A sanctioned LNG tanker appears to be transferring its Russian cargo via STS in the Med, Bloomberg said.

  • The measures are a sign of the lengths that Russia is now going to so that it can circumvent US sanctions.
  • The Pioneer, sanctioned by the US last week, conducted an STS to the Palau-flagged, UAE owned and Indian-managed New Energy Tanker north of the Suez Canal.
  • The Pioneer loaded the cargo from Russia’s sanctioned Arctic LNG-2 site Aug. 1-3.
  • Reuters said that STS activity usually involves unloading LNG from costly ice-class tankers onto cheaper conventional gas carriers. However, this process also complicates vessel tracking for cargoes.
  • Arctic LNG 2 has been expected to reach an eventual output of 19.8m mtpa, but sanctions on the project and a lack of ice class tankers has stalled its development.
