Thousands March For Castillo Resignation Across Nation

PERU
  • Thousands of people took to the streets across Peru on Saturday to demand the resignation of President Pedro Castillo. The president’s approval rating continues to hover around 25% amid ongoing allegations of corruption within his administration.
    • "We see a government involved in corruption and Congress doesn't react," said Lucas Ghersi, a conservative lawyer who is one of the organizers of the march, called Peru Reacts.
    • Police with helmets and plastic shields launched several tear gas canisters in an attempt to disperse the crowds. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
    • Similar protests were held in other cities across the country, including Arequipa, Chiclayo, Cusco and Trujillo, according to reports and images broadcast by local television channel Canal N.
  • Separately, in a tweet posted on Sunday, Peru’s Prosecutor’s Office has included Foreign Trade Minister Roberto Sanchez in the preliminary investigation for a case that involves President Pedro Castillo.
    • The Prosecutor’s Office said that Sanchez will be investigated for the crime of obstruction of justice.
