US-CHINA

14:00 ET 19:00 BST: The Senate Appropriations Committee will hear testimony from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on security, competitiveness, and the “Path Ahead for the U.S.-China Relationship.”

  • Livestream: LINK
  • The panel is potentially important hearing for the future of US policy on China and a rare opportunity to see three high-profile cabinet secretaries testify to the same panel.
  • Reuters: "Cabinet secretaries rarely testify together at public congressional hearings, but lawmakers from both parties and Biden's Democratic administration have been vying to show that they view the Chinese Communist government as the greatest challenge Washington faces."
  • The hearing comes in the wake of a productive meeting between White House Nation Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Vienna last week which appeared to offer a route back towards the resumption of high level diplomatic engagement.
  • Observers will be watching today's hearing to see if the Biden administration continues to make moves away from an ultra-hawkish position on Beijing.
