Tighter Virus Countermeasures Take Effect

Spot USD/THB last sits -0.025 at THB32.580, after the greenback's sell-off seen last Friday. A slide through Jul 6 low of THB32.067 would give bears some reprieve, while bulls need a clearance of Jul 9 high of THB32.728, before targeting Apr 14, 2020 high of THB32.792.

  • Thailand confirmed the tightening of its virus countermeasures before the weekend, which takes effect today and will last through Jul 25. The country will observe strict curbs in provinces deemed Covid-19 hot spots, including Bangkok. Separately, Phuket decided to shut all schools until Jul 23, after detecting its first positive case of the Delta variant in a foreign businessman.
  • The Bangkok Post reported that the Thai Covid-19 task force "plans to table before the cabinet on Tuesday remedy measures for those affected by the strict lockdown measures."
  • Meanwhile, health authorities confirmed that they consider giving booster jabs to medical staff, after hundreds of medical workers vaccinated with the Sinovac product contracted the virus.
  • The local data docket is fairly empty this week. BoT Dep Gov Supapongse will address the quarterly analyst meeting at 1000ICT/0400BST.
