TMX Expansion Could Displace Traditional Chinese Flows: Platts

China’s traditional heavy crude providers are set to face additional pressure amid completion of the TMX pipeline in Canada, according to Platts Oil Market Podcast.

  • With China having the potential to be a key buyer for heavy sour TMX grades, this could displace some Angolan crude, Platts said.
  • Medium sour Guyanese grades can also head to China, which will spur plenty of competition for grades that could trade around the Atlantic basin, Platts added.
  • The Trans Mountain pipeline’s 590k b/d expansion began commercial operations May 1, enabling additional Canadian crude grades to be exported from Alberta to the Pacific Coast.
