Top UKR Sec Official Says Russia Attempting To Provoke Response

A recent surge of activity in Eastern Ukraine has prompted fears that Moscow is trying to establish a pretext for the invasion of Ukraine.

  • Several hours ago a bomb blast was reported in Donetsk and there have been videos from the area showing an evacuation of ethnic Russians on buses from Ukraine to Russia.
  • In response to speculation about a military confrontation Ukrainian Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov has said: Russia attempts to provoke Ukraine's armed forces to respond - There is no planned attacks on civilian population in eastern Ukraine - We do not see a full-scale invasion of territory of Ukraine.
  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said to the UN Security Council that he has briefed Ukrainian government officials on how and when an invasion might take place.
  • The accusation of genocide against ethnic Russians was highlighted as a likely pretext for invasion.
