Trump Leading Republican Primary Field In Congressional Endorsements

Former President Donald Trump is dominating the GOP primary field in Congressional endorsements, according to new data compiled by FiveThirtyEight.com

• The tracker, which provides points based upon weighted strength of office, gives Trump 230 points, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) 11 points, and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley 3 points.
• According to 538's methodology, an endorsement is "a public display or pronouncement of support that articulates or strongly implies that a candidate is the endorser’s current No. 1 choice for president."
• 538's data shows that although the 2016 presidential election bucked the trend, "historically, endorsements have proven pretty predictive of who wins presidential nominating contests. Since the modern primary era began in 1972, there have been 17 Democratic or Republican primary fights that did not feature an incumbent president. The candidate with the most endorsement points on the day before the Iowa caucuses won 11. That’s a better track record than polls have at the same point in the election."
