Turkey, Finland to Discuss NATO Membership This Week; Budget Deficit Widens

  • On Sweden and Finland’s NATO bid, Presidential Spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin noted that Turkey backs the alliance’s open-door policy and that the Nordic nations’ fulfillment of their commitments in line with the June 2022 Trilateral Memorandum will accelerate the process, Hurriyet report. Bloomberg reported this morning that Turkey and Finland will discuss NATO membership and bilateral issues during a visit of the Finland President to Turkey on March 16-17.
  • Turkish, Russian, Iranian, and Syrian deputy foreign ministers will meet in Russia’s capital Moscow on March 15-16 for talks on Syria, according to diplomatic sources cited by Hurriyet. In December last year, the nations’ defense ministers met in Moscow, where the three parties agreed to continue the tripartite meetings to ensure stability in Syria and the wider region.
  • Turkey's budget deficit widened to TRY170.6b in February from -TRY32.2b in January, according to figures released by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance this morning. Budget revenue fell to TRY218.8b from TRY289.1b, while expenditure rose to TRY389.4b from TRY321.3b.
  • President Erdogan will address his party’s lawmakers at 0900 GMT/1200 local time in Ankara. He will then meet Hungary Prime Minister Orban at 1845 GMT/2045 local time.
