Turkey in Talks With US Over Nuclear Reactor Purchases

TURKEY
  • Turkey’s government and private companies are in talks with the US for purchases of small nuclear reactors (known as SMRs), as the country looks to wean itself off coal, Bloomberg report. There is room to purchase as many as 35 SMRs, US State Department Official Justin Friedman said, citing Turkish aspirations for 20 gigawatts of electricity generation capacity from nuclear by 2050. Investment would cost billions of dollars and it’s unclear how the financing would work should the talks result in a commercial deal.
  • Negotiations in Tuesday’s Minimum Wage Determination Commission ended without agreement after the Turk-Is labour union demanded an increase to TRY 9,000 (currently the minimum wage is TRY 5500).
  • President Erdogan will address his party’s lawmakers at 0900 GMT/1200 local time in Ankara. There are no major economic releases scheduled today ahead of the CBRT rate decision tomorrow, where rates are expected to be held at 9.0% as the central bank ends its cutting cycle.
