Turkish Analysts Speculate Over Early Election Prospects

TURKEY

LOCAL NEWS

  • Local analysts speculate over the possibility of snap elections following the announcement of the 50% minimum wage increase and Erdogan’s FX-linked deposit scheme – saying that it would echo past moves to unsettle the opposition and prove his leadership credentials.
    • A Turkish professor said these measures could be a prelude to an early election announcement. However, this would be notably risky, given the recent decline in support which has brought the opposition alliance almost on par with the People’s alliance.
    • Erdogan has, however, noted on multiple occasions that elections are set for June 2023, so any snap election would be a surprise
