Turkish, Greek Foreign Ministers Meet Amidst High Regional Tensions

EUROPE

Turkish state media reporting that Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has met with his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias on the sidelines of the Globsec 2020 Bratislava Forum in Slovakia.

  • This marks the first meeting between the two foreign ministers since the escalation in tensions in the region over the summer months.
  • Tensions between Greece and Turkey (as well as Cyprus and Turkey, and indeed the wider EU and Turkey) remain high after months of geopolitical posturing by both sides regarding disputed maritime borders and hydrocarbon drilling rights in the eastern Mediterranean.
  • Last week NATO (of which both countries are members) brokered the establishment of a military hotline between Athens and Ankara in an effort to avoid the outbreak of armed conflict between the two sides.
  • The withdrawal of the Turkish seismic research vessel, the Oruc Reis, from the disputed area in mid-September was seen as a first step towards the de-escalation of tensions, although Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis said it remained to be seen whether the withdrawal of the ship from disputed waters was a short-term ploy or a 'sincere move' towards de-escalation.
