Two-Thirds Of Democrats Say Biden Should Withdraw, AP-NORC

US

A new survey from The Associated Press-NORC has found that two-thirds of Democrats say President Biden should withdraw from the presidential race to allow the party to nominate an alternative candidate.

  • AP notes that the survey, "sharply undercut[s] [Biden's] post-debate claim that “average Democrats” are still with him even if some “big names” are turning on him."
  • Biden remains adamant that his slight (2-point) polling gap to former President Trump can be bridged over the next four months - a period where there is traditionally significant movement in polling. Biden said in an interview with BET News yesterday: “The point is, we’re just getting down to gametime right now.”
  • Biden detractors argue that his age-related limitations are not fully factored into polling and diminishes his ability to overcome baked-in voter concerns or engage in the type of intensive campaigning that can move public opinion.
  • The 'Biden out' camp scored a notable win today, with the DNC announcing that Biden's nomination would not expedited ahead of the convention in August, allowing more time for additional negative polls to nudge Biden to the exit, and for Democrat rebels to formulate a Plan B.
  • The number of lawmakers (20) publicly calling on Biden to drop out remains unchanged from before the Trump assassination attempt, reflecting a period of grace from intra-party squabbling. The number is likely to rise as frontline Democrats react to polling which indicates a major Congressional wipeout could be on the cards if Biden remains at the top of the ticket.
