U.S. & Philippines Confirm Intentions To Ramp Up Military Cooperation

The U.S. and the Philippines said in a joint statement after strategic talks that they will fully implement their enhanced defence agreement, finalise more areas for military projects and expedite work on defence modernisation.

  • The Philippines has deepened its military cooperation with the U.S. amid growing Chinese foreign policy assertiveness, with Beijing and Manila engaged in territorial disputes over some parts of the South China Sea.
  • Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said that an arms race is not an option for the Philippines, given its current economic situation, which is why Manila will seek diplomatic solutions.
  • However, he confirmed plans to increase the rotational presence of U.S. troops and materiel on the Philippine soil. Last year, the two nations agreed to build new military infrastructure, while U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris reaffirmed security guarantees for the Philippines.
