UK Banks Still Hold Strong Capital Position - BOE FPS

BOE
(MNI) London
  • The Financial Policy Committee highlighted that despite volatile global financial markets (esp. commodities) the UK financial market and major banks’ capital and liquidity positions have remained resilient in the face of increased economic uncertainty.
  • Major banks’ CET1 capital ratio was at 16.3% at the end of 2021 and the FPC, following tests, is confident in their resilience to tolerate severe disruption.
  • This is largely due to the UK financial system’s low level of direct linkages and exposure to Russia, which total 1% of CET1 capital and minimal trade links accounting for only approximately 0.2% of UK GDP.
  • Greater financial uncertainty is related to global supply chain disruptions, whereby sustained energy and commodity price pressures pose a risk to incomes.
