UK Home Secretary Priti Patel and her French counterpart Geral Darmanin are set to meet at 1900CET (1800GMT) in Paris to discuss the migrant situation in the English Channel. Record numbers of migrants are crossing the Channel from Frence to the UK, causing a major political backlash.

  • Each side has blamed the other in the row, which amidst already-strained Franco-British relations could spill over into other areas of UK-French and UK-EU policy.
  • France have often advocated a hard-line in EU negotiations with the UK. Should a row over migration escalate it could see Paris pushing for little leeway being given to the UK in talks on the Northern Ireland protocol or on fisheries, risking a breakdown in UK-EU relations.
