UK Oil, Gas Licensing Round Attracts 115 Bids

OIL

The latest UK oil and gas exploration round attracted 115 bids with the licenses likely to be awarded from the second quarter, despite the increase the country’s windfall taxes on North Sea producers, the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) said.

  • This was higher than in the previous licensing round held in 2016, when 104 bids were received.
  • North Sea oil and gas investment became recently under pressure after the UK’s decision to raise the windfall tax on North Sea producers to 35% from 25% previously.
  • Harbour Energy decided to pass on a licensing bid amid the increase in the tax. Other producers such as TotalEnergies announced to cut investments in oil and gas projects in the North Sea by 25% this year.
