Ukraine-Russia Talks Ongoing, But Both Remain Far Apart

UKRAINE
  • Talks between both sides started at 1200GMT, with no headlines hitting the wires yet on next moves, but both sides remain far apart on their key demands.
  • Russia previously called for demilitarization as a precondition for talks, but dropped this to facilitate the meeting. However, they will likely call on Ukraine to do this and agree to the Minsk accords and non-NATO accession to secure a ceasefire.
  • Ukraine is unlikely to agree to this and has already called on Russia to enact a ceasefire and withdraw its troops – something that seems unlikely unless Putin is given some concessions.
  • Fighting has continued over the weekend and has been more difficult for Russia than was likely imagined with Ukraine holding key cities like Kyiv & Kharkiv. Putin has used roughly 30% of his potential force and reports have been seen of massive military columns of heavy weapons and equipment headed towards Kyiv. Putin has also escalated the rhetoric through nuclear threats, but this seems like an unimaginable episode of brinkmanship – although nothing can be off the table if Russia risks losing the war.
  • Experts are still anticipating a difficult run for Russia in the coming days with many civilians armed and ready to engage in guerrilla warfare tactics that are extremely difficult for Russian troops to counter and could slow their progress through key cities.
  • Socio-political pressure across the globe and in Russia are building against the war and formed part of the pressure that have led to the latest sanctions measures from the West over the weekend.
