Unchanged Asia LNG Imports Expected in May

LNG

Asian LNG imports are expected to hold steady with May unchanged from April at 20.81m tonnes and down slightly from March at 22.1m tonnes according to Kpler data with falling prices supporting demand.

  • Japan's imports are estimated to fall to 4.24m tonnes in May from 5.0m in April and 5.55m in March.
  • China is estimated just slightly lower at 5.23m tonnes in May compared to 5.33m in April and 5.46m in March. A spot price below 10$/mmbtu is required to be competitive in the domestic market according to Reuters.
  • India’s imports are also expected to dip slightly to 1.91m tonnes in May from 1.98m in April, but up from 1.46m in January.
  • Low prices have supported the steady supplies which would normally be expecting a dip in seasonal demand during the shoulder month ahead of the summer cooling period.
  • Preliminary June imports for Asia are 19.36m tonnes according to Kpler with more cargoes to be assessed in coming weeks.
