US-DeSantis To Meet With Senior Ministers In Final Leg Of Trip

UK

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is in the UK today to conclude his tour of some of the US' closest international allies. This was billed as a trade mission but widely viewed as an attempt by the potential Republican presidential hopeful to bolster his foreign policy credentials. DeSantis will meet with Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and International Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch in the afternoon UK time.

  • Unlike his meetings in Japan and South Korea, DeSantis will not have a meeting with UK PM Rishi Sunak. The British gov't has insisted that it is not normal protocol for the PM to meet the governor of a US state, but there is likely some trepidation in Downing St. about meeting with DeSantis given the prospect of rhetorical blowback from GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
  • Politico reports a UK gov't official stating that DeSantis and Badenoch could hold talks on the potential for a UK-Florida trade deal.
