US East Coast Gasoline Demand Fell in 2022

Gasoline implied demand on the US East Coast fell to the lowest level in 25 years last year with the exception of 2020 according to EIA data.

  • Consumption fell by 150kbpd in 2022 due to historically high gasoline prices and an increase in working-from-home. The demand drop helped against a backdrop of tight supplies with limted fuel from producers on the Gulf Coast to consumers on the East Coast.
  • The East Coast region is dependent on pipeline supplies due to a lack of refining capacity in the area after losing more than half of its capacity in the last 20 years.
