US Gen.-Ukraine Will Run Out Of Shells 'In Short Order' w/o US Support

UKRAINE

Wires reporting comments from Gen Christopher Cavoli, US Commander at the US European Command regarding the situation for Ukraine. Gen. Cavoli says that Ukraine will run out of artillery shells and air defence interceptors "in fairly short order" without US support. Adds that the "stakes are very high" for Ukraine.

  • Cavoli speaking at a House of Representatives Armed Services commitee hearing on "the United States’ military posture and the national security challenges in Europe" alongside Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Dr. Celeste Wallander. Livestream here.
  • Cavoli: "They're really dependent this year on us,[...] and without our support they will not be able to prevail...Based on my experience in 37-plus years in the US military, if one side can shoot and the other side can't shoot back, the side that can't shoot back loses".
  • Earlier, Al Jazeera reported on Russia's slow but steady advance towards the town of Chasiv Yar, west of Bahkmut. As the report states, "Capturing Chasiv Yar would facilitate a Russian advance towards the largest remaining urban centres of Donetsk – Sloviansk and Kramatorsk."
  • The looming Congressional showdown on the supplemental package to fund Ukraine's military could lead to major instability in the US House of Representatives. As we noted in our US Daily Brief earlier today, "It is looking increasingly likely that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will face a rebellion to oust him for his job if he follows through with his plan to move a national security supplemental bill which legislates new funds for Ukraine and Israel.
