US House Passes Bill to Harden Iran Sanctions

OIL

US House of Representatives has passed a bill Nov. 3 aimed at hardening sanctions on Iranian oil, Reuters reported, although the effectiveness of such legislation is uncertain.

  • The Stop Harboring Iranian Petroleum (SHIP) bill, if it became law, would impose measures on foreign ports and refineries processing Iranian oil exports and violating US. sanctions.
  • The bill still needs to pass the Senate and be signed by President Joe Biden.
  • Enshrining the bill into law does not guarantee its effectiveness as sanctions measures passed in Congress come with national security waivers allowing the President discretion in its enforcement, Reuters said.
  • China could also continue importing Iranian oil despite any strengthening of sanctions.
  • Iranian exports have been at their highest level in four years, at around 1.5m b/d, according to Reuters.
