US Intends Further Strikes on Iran Backed Targets

The US intends to undertake further strikes in retaliation for the US personal killed by an Iranian backed militia the weekend before last according to White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

  • "We intend to take additional strikes, and additional action, to continue to send a clear message that the United States will respond when our forces are attacked, when our people are killed,” Sullivan said on Sunday.
  • The US and UK launched strikes on 36 Houthi targets across 13 sites in Yemen on Saturday.
  • They were said to be targeted because they were launching attacks towards international shipping in the Red Sea.
  • The US carried out a first wave of retaliatory strikes on Friday at more than 85 targets in Iraq and Syria linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and associated militias.
  • Sullivan said Sunday "I would not describe it as some open-ended military campaign." adding "What happened on Friday was the beginning, not the end, of our response, and there will be more steps - some seen, some perhaps unseen."
  • The strikes in the region have escalated from Houthi targets in Yemen attacking Red Sea shipping to Iranian backed groups across Iraq and Syria as tensions in the region grow.
