US/Israeli Officials To Meet Next Week To Discuss Rafah Operation

SECURITY

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has told reporters that a senior US interagency team composed of military, intelligence, and humanitarian officials will hold a meeting with Israeli counterparts in Washington "early next week" to discuss an upcoming Israeli military operation in Rafah

  • Jean-Pierre says the US is, "deeply concerned about report citing imminent famine in Gaza," adding that, "Israel needs to allow unimpeded access for relief aid."
  • The comments come as a rift between the White House and the Netanyahu administration was more publicly expressed yesterday by White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan who reiterated that the US backs Israel's right to "go after" Hamas but strongly opposes any ground operation in Rafah, which would "deepen the anarchy in Gaza."
  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to travel to the Middle East this week for a sixth wartime visit. Blinken will again be tasked with pressing for a short-term ceasefire agreement but is also likely to convey to Israeli officials that a credible plan must be presented for stabilising Gaza and preventing an escalating humanitarian crisis before any IDF operation in Rafah can begin.
