US LNG Permit Pause Will Slow Emissions Reduction Efforts: Exxon

The Biden administration’s decision to pause new LNG export licenses will slow efforts to reduce climate-damaging emissions and is “a mistake” according to Exxon Mobil Corp via Bloomberg.

  • “Reducing production of LNG actually harms the world achieving net zero sooner rather than later,” said Chief Financial Officer Kathy Mikells.
  • Natural gas liquefied for export produces carbon emissions but is 50% cleaner than coal when burned for power generation.
  • Exxon’s 18.1mtpa Golden Pass project under construction on the US Gulf Coast will probably start up next year and already has all the required government approvals, Mikells said.
