US Public Support For Sanctions Up, But Opposed To Boots On Ground

US-RUSSIA

The latest opinion polling from Morning Consult show US public support for the imposition of sanctions on Russia up across the political spectrum. However, support for the US sending troops to eastern Ukraine to fight alongside Ukrainian divisions is down among supporters of all political parties.

  • 'If Russia invades the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine and declares it an independent republic, the United States should....'
    • Impose sanctions on Russia (approve): All voters: 51% (+7), Democrats: 54% (+10), Republicans: 53% (+8).
    • Deploy troops to eastern Ukraine: All voters: 19% (-3), Democrats: 20% (-6), Republicans: 18% (-5).
    • Morning Consult, Fieldwork: 19-20 Feb, chgs w/ 7 Feb. 2,000 respondents.
  • The Morning Consult polling was carried out prior to the Russian recognition of the so-called Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics and the escalation in tensions to the brink of all-out war. As such, support for sanctions could now spike even higher, although it seems public opinion will remain largely against putting US boots on the ground.
