US Refining Capacity Rises 100kbpd After Two Years of Decline

REFINING

US crude oil refining capacity has increased by more than 100kbpd to 18.1mbpd this year, after declining for two years according to the EIA Refinery Capacity Report.

  • This year’s capacity of 18.1mbpd remains just below the 2019 peak of 18.98mbpd.
  • During the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, processing capacity to produce gasoline, diesel and jet fuel fell by 5.4%.
  • This year’s increases reflect capacity expansions at Marathon Petroleum and Citgo Petroleum. The total does not include a 250kbpd increase that came after the cutoff date at Exxon Mobil’s Beaumont, Texas refinery in March of this year. The Beaumont expansion pushed the total to about 18.3mbpd.
