US: Scholz To Travel To White House 7 Feb

GERMANY

The White House has confirmed that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to Washington, D.C. on 7 February for talks with US President Joe Biden at the White House.

  • WH statement says that ,"The leaders will discuss their shared commitment to both ongoing diplomacy and joint efforts to deter further Russian aggression against Ukraine"
  • Minor furore erupted last week when there were reports Scholz 'snubbed' a late-notice invite for talks at the White House.
  • German and US gov'ts have not seen eye-to-eye on the Ukraine/Russia crisis. The US is advocating that the Nord Stream II gas pipeline from Russia to Germany not become operational. There has also been calls from the US for more forceful sanctions to come into place should Russia invade Uktaine than from Berlin, with the German gov't seemingly ruling out cutting Russia out from the SWIFT payments system in the event of a Russian incursion into Ukraine.
