US State Department Supports Canada's Decision To Return Gas Turbine

ENERGY SECURITY

The US State Department has released a statement supporting the Canadian decision to return a gas turbine to Germany.

  • State Department spox Ned Price: "In the short term, the turbine will allow Germany and other European countries to replenish their gas reserves, increasing their energy security and resilience and countering Russia's efforts to weaponise energy."
  • Canada’s natural resources minister Jonathan Wilkinson said on Saturday that the Canadian government was issuing a "revocable permit” to exempt the return of the turbine from Russian sanctions.
  • Alexandra Chyczij of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, said on Saturday “our community is deeply disappointed by the Canadian government’s decision to bow to Russian blackmail."
  • The turbine will be sent to Germany and then forwarded to Russian state-owned Gazprom for use in the pipeline Nordstream 1.
  • Gazprom blamed problems with the turbine for the 60% drop in Nordstream 1's output last month.
