SECURITY

Reuters reporting that General Randy George, President Biden's nominee to become the top US Army General, says that Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACM) missiles would be "helpful" to Ukraine.

  • George: "The ATACMS are obviously are great. That missile is a great system, adds range. So that's basically what it would be providing is the ability to attack deeper targets."
  • ATACMS have an operating range of around 190 miles which would significantly aid in Ukraine's counter attack and provide the Ukrainian military with deep strike capabilities to hit logistical lines beyond the current point of engagement.
  • The Biden administration has resisted the transfer of the missiles due to concerns they could be used to strike targets within the Russian Federation. The missiles could also be used to strike targets within occupied Crimea.
  • White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in an interview with MSNBC this morning that Biden will discuss the provision of the missiles in his bilat with President Zelensky which is now underway.
  • A recent pivot from the Biden administration on the provision of cluster munitions suggests that the supply of ATACMs is increasingly likely.
