US Treasury Official-Talks On Debt Relief To Be 'Difficult'

Ahead of the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting in Bangalore, India on 24-25 Feb, wires reporting comments from a US Treasury Dep't official stating that 'progress is needed on eliminating roadblocks to sovereign debt relief to avoid debt distress becoming a systemic issue in the coming years', adding that talks over debt relief for vulnerable countries are expected to be 'difficult'.

  • Says that 'regardless of whether a communique is issued; that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and other G20 finance ministers 'will make strong statements regarding Russia's war in Ukraine.'
  • In January, Yellen engaged in a visit to several African states, some heavily indebted to China, in an effort to reverse what has been viewed as a period of neglect that has seen many capitals shift their diplomatic and economic focus to Beijing and/or Moscow rather than Washington, D.C. President Biden is set to visit Africa in 2023, with First Lady Jill Biden currently on a tour of Namibia and Kenya.
