USDCAD Bullish Theme Could Be Slowed By Yield Differentials

CANADA
  • USDCAD has pulled back to levels briefly seen after the FOMC minutes, with high beta majors recovering along with the bounce in oil.
  • USDCAD trades -0.15% at 1.2894 although recent moves higher have established a technical bullish theme, exposing key short-term resistance at 1.2985 (Aug 5 high) after the earlier session high of 1.2947 cleared the week’s high more comfortably.
  • This bullish theme could however come under pressure with a further re-widening in Can-US yield differentials, especially at the front end with the 2Y diff at +13bps from 0 early in the week, the highest since the front-loaded guidance behind the BoC’s 100bp hike on Jul 13.
