Venezuelan Energy Sanctions Relief Further Pressed by Activist Arrest

US officials said they are "deeply concerned" by reports that human rights activist Rocio San Miguel and members of her family have been arrested in Venezuela – a move which further complicates energy sanctions relief.

  • "We are watching this very, very closely," White House spokesperson John Kirby told reporters.
  • "Mr. Maduro needs to meet the commitments that he made back in the fall about how they are going to treat civil society, political activists, as well as opposition parties," Kirby said.
  • Washington began reimposing sanctions last month due to Venezuela’s top court upholding a ban against María Corina Machado - the opposition leader - from running against Venezuela’s Maduro.
  • The US looks set to reimpose energy sanctions on Venezuela from April 18 due to the lack of progress towards election commitments by the Maduro government.
