HUNGARY: Vice President of the governing Fidesz Party and Minister for Family,
Youth and International Affairs Katalin Novak has announced that Fidesz MEPs
intend to suspend their membership of the centre-right European People's Party
(EPP) in the European Parliament.
- Fidesz has been suspended by the EPP since March 2019 due to what the EPP has
said is Fidesz's shift away from EPP values.
- Should Fidesz officially leave the EPP its 13 MEPs would become part of the
non-inscrits group.
- Fidesz and PM Viktor Orban have strong ties to Poland's governing Law and
Justice Party (PiS) and its chairman Jaroslaw Kaczynski. PiS sits as part of the
soft-eurosceptic European Conservatives and Reformists group in the European
Parliament.
