Voters Prefer Energy Price Caps According To Poll

AUSTRALIA

79% of people in the Herald’s Resolve Political Monitor wanted energy price caps, which was their preferred solution to surging energy costs. Whatever the government decides to do, the impact is unlikely to be felt before mid-2023 and only reduce the increase in power prices rather than actually decreasing them.

  • A significant 63% supported public ownership of power assets. 59% wanted taxpayer-funded subsidies for low-income households and 51% supported higher taxes on energy exporters.
  • 37% believe that Labor is better at dealing with the rising cost of living with 24% saying the Coalition is.

  • RBA Governor Lowe pointed out last week that dealing with a number of supply-side problems, including an increase in the supply of power, would be the best thing to reduce inflation pressures going forward.
