Voters Still Largely Unfamiliar With Speaker Johnson

US

A new survey from NBC News has found that 43% of voters do not know House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) or do not recognise his name. The survey finds that, amongst voters who do know Johnson, “14% say they have a positive view of him and 23% say they have a negative view of him. An additional 20% of voters view him neutrally.”

  • NBC notes that although, “Johnson's favorability ratings are currently higher than former Speaker Kevin McCarthy's were in September, shortly before he was ousted from the role,” Democrat strategists will likely mount a campaign highlighting Johnson’s perceived “extreme” positions on social issues and deepening alignment with former President Donald Trump – seen as a political vulnerability for Republicans in 2024.
  • The Hill notes: "[Democrats are] betting Johnson’s ardent support of former President Trump and record on issues like same-sex marriage, abortion and overturning the 2020 election results will backfire on swing and independent voters."
