Wales To Enter Two-Week COVID-19 'Fire Break' Lockdown

UK

Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford announces that Wales will go into a two-week 'fire break' lockdown in an effort to curtail the spread of COVID-19 in the country. Starts at 1800BST on Friday.

  • Individuals will be required to stay at home, apart from exercising or buying essential goods, all hospitality will be closed, and schools will not open for years nine and above after the October half term.
  • Drakeford promises a GBP300mn 'resilience fund', with GBP1,000 initially paid to every business and up to GBP5,000 for those in hospitality.
  • Move highlights the difficulty the UK gov't has in managing the virus, given that the four different nations of the UK can impose restrictions without the consent of Westminster, but it is the UK gov't Treasury that has to fund support programmes for all the nations of the UK.
