WTI Midland Crude Already Helping Shape Dated Brent Benchmark

The US WTI Midland crude oil addition into the Platts Dated Brent benchmark has joined the other core grades in the North Sea in shaping the reference value of the physical market.

  • Forties was yesterday the most competitive grade in the Dated Brent assessment across May 27-31 loading dates, WTI Midland was most competitive on June 1-2 loading dates and Forties was again most competitive on the June 3-17 loading dates.
  • WTI Midland has been added to the benchmark due to the long term decline in supply of the five North Sea crudes.
  • The inclusion of US WTI Midland has already increased the volume and should also help to boost the depth of the market.
