Zelenskyy To Attend Meeting On EU Expansion In Western Balkans

The Greek gov't has confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will attend a dinner in Athens alongside European Commission and Council presidents and national leaders of western Balkan nations to discuss the EU's enlargement process in the region.

  • While any further expansion of the EU to include any of non-EU western Balkan nations (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Kosovo, Northern Macedonia) is unlikely in the short-to-medium term, Brussels is nervous about Moscow's efforts to increase its influence in the region.
  • There has been some disquiet within the western Balkan group after Moldova and Ukraine have been seen to 'leapfrog' over countries with longer accession processes such as Bosnia-Herzegovina.
