3 More Prefectures Could Go Into COVID-19 State Of Emergency From Sunday

JAPAN

Kyodo News reporting that from Sunday, three additional prefectures could go into COVID-19 state of emergencies due to rising COVID-19 cases.

  • Several subprefectures on the northern island of Hokkaido could go into SoE measures after 712 new cases were logged in the prefecture yesterday, primarily around the prefectural capital Sapporo but also the cities of Asahikawa and Hakodate.
  • The Honshu prefectures of Hiroshima and Okayama are also at risk of joining Tokyo, Aichi, Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto and Fukuoka in state of emergency measures, currently in place until end-May.
  • There is likely to be extreme concern among the Japanese gov't over the country's ability to host the already-delayed Olympic Games in Tokyo in just over two month's time. The US Olympic team has already stated that it will not hold training camps in Japan before the games, while an opinion poll of Japanese citizens earlier this week showed most in favour of scrapping the games during the pandemic.
