84% Of Students Believe The Govt Should Help Pay Student Loans

US

A new Harris poll has found that a huge bipartisan majority of students believe that the government should do more to help ease their student loan debt, a worrying sign for the Biden administration as it struggles to fulfil its campaign promise on loan forgiveness under pressure from the Supreme Court.

  • Harris Poll CEO John Gerzema: "Biden's popular student loan program was struck down, but the genie is out of the bottle. ... In courting young voters, taking things away is not usually a good campaign strategy."
  • Axios notes: “The trends could spell trouble for President Biden as he tries to turn out younger voters.”
  • Biden said at his State of the Union Address earlier this month: “When I was told I couldn’t universally just change the way in which we dealt with student loans. I fixed two student loan programs that already existed to reduce the burden of student debt for nearly 4 million Americans, including nurses, firefighters and others in public service.”
