Ahn Drops Campaign Merger Proposal, Yoon Holds Lead Over Lee

SOUTH KOREA

Presidential candidate Ahn Cheol-soo of the People's Party withdrew his offer to merge candidacies with main opposition People Power Party candidate Yoon Suk-yeol and will finish the campaign alone. Ahn ranks third in most opinion polls, but trails both Yoon and ruling Democratic Party's Lee by significant margins.

  • Yonhap cited Ahn as saying: "Over the past week, the No. 1 opposition party sufficiently and clearly demonstrated through its lack of response and spreading of fake news that it has neither the will nor the sincerity for a merger."
  • The latest round of polls continue to show Yoon leading Lee by a few percentage points, putting both near the 40% mark. Betting markets also favour the main opposition candidate as the March 9 election day draws near.
