Amwaj: Efforts Being Made To Convene Informal JCPOA Summit At UNGA

SECURITY

UK based news outlet Amwaj has reported that, according to sources, efforts are being made to convene a meeting of the parties of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action Iranian nuclear accords on the margins of this month's United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

  • Amwaj-media: "While few observers expect the imminent revival of the accord, informed sources have indicated to [Amwaj] that efforts are being made to convene a summit in New York between Iran and the other remaining signatories to the nuclear deal, namely Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia. If the session takes place, it could help solidify the emerging Iran-US engagement."
  • The report comes as two recent developments have hinted at the possibility of returning to the negotiating table: The unfreezing of USD$6 billion in Iranian funds in return for the release of detained US citizens, and an apparent slowing of Iran's nuclear enrichment programme.
  • Both developments are understood to represent key precepts of an unwritten agreement between the parties to deescalate tensions and lay the groundwork for returning to talks.
