Bab al-Mandab Strait Tanker Traffic Falls Over 40% This Week

Tankers carrying crude oil and fuel entering the Bab al-Mandab strait fell to around 30 this week, down by over 40% from the daily average seen in the previous three weeks as more shipping companies pause routes in the Red Sea according to Bloomberg ship tracking.


  • Yemen’s Houthi rebels have vowed to continue targeting ships in the Red Sea despite the planned US-led naval task force to secure the area, according to Bloomberg.
  • About 12% of world shipping traffic passes up the Red Sea and through the Suez Canal but the impact on oil supply has been limited so far.
