Barisan Nasional Top Brass Meet To Discuss Coalition Offers

ASIA

Outgoing Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri confirmed that the top brass of his UMNO party will convene tonight (8:30pm) to discuss the role it could play in the formation of the next government. Party officials will review the offers received from rival political groups and decide whether to back Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional as senior coalition partner.

  • The decision of UMNO Supreme Council will need to be approved by top executives of the UMNO-led Barisan Nasional alliance, who are set to discuss the matter tomorrow morning. Sources from BN component parties told Malaysiakini that the decision will be conveyed to all 30 MPs from the bloc.
  • The New Straits Times circulated an alleged 10-point agreement between BN and PH that could serve as a basis for a unity government. Separately, BN's Ismail Sabri reportedly held talks with Perikatan's Muhyiddin earlier today.
  • Latest reports point to an apparent split among UMNO factions as to the party's preferred coalition partner, with Zahid pushing for cooperation with Pakatan and Ismail Sabri reaching out to Perikatan. Internal factional dynamics may decide about the composition of the next government.
