Biden: "America Will Not Default" Says "We Will Get Agreement On Budget"

US

US President Joe Biden has delivered remarks to the press to update on debt limit negotiations shortly before departing on his trip to Japan.

  • Biden: "We had a productive meeting yesterday... it was civil and respectful and everyone came to the meeting in good faith. I am confident that we will get the agreement on the budget, that America will not default."
  • Biden says that every leader who was in the room "understands the consequences" if "America didn't pay its bills."
  • Biden says, "we're gonna come together because there's no alternative. We need to do the right thing for the country. We have to move on."
  • Biden says: "To be clear, this negotiation is about the outlines of what the budget will look like. Not about whether or not we're gonna, in fact, pay our debts. The leaders have all agreed we will not default."
  • Biden says that he will be in constant contact with his representatives during negotiations with McCarthy while he is at the G7, and confirms that he has cut his travel to PNG and Australia in order to complete the deal.
  • Biden says he will have "more to say on the issue" at a press conference on Sunday.
