Biden Document Controversy Casts Shadow Over 2024 Announcement

US

A Department of Justice announcement that more classified documents have been retrieved from President Biden’s Delaware home is beginning to cast doubt upon President Biden's expected announcement of a 2024 re-election bid.

  • Joseph Fitzpatrick, spokesman for the special counsel investigating Biden’s case said: “The F.B.I. on Friday executed a planned, consensual search of the president’s residence in Wilmington.”
  • Jonathan Alter writes in the NYT that the controversy has "dulled" the "sharp ethical contrast" between Biden and former President Donald Trump. "That complicates the president’s expected re-election campaign — and could even short-circuit it."
  • The New York Times: “The remarkable search of a sitting president’s home by federal agents dramatically escalated the legal and political situation for the president...”
  • According to FiveThirtyEight, Biden's approval rating has sunk by two-percentage-points since the story broke. Effectively quashing Biden's strong 2023 momentum.
  • The story has reignited questions over whether Biden is the strongest Democrat candidate to challenge in 2024. If the story continues to dominate the news cycle expect calls for Biden to step aside to intensify with California Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) touted as potential Biden alternatives.
