Biden's G7 Schedule Complicates Negotiations As GOP Withdraws From Talks

US

Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman has tweeted that there are, "no follow up talks scheduled," as news breaks from Capitol Hill that GOP negotiators have abandoned debt limit talks with the White House.

  • The collapse of talks seriously threatens the tentative timeline to produce a framework for legislation by Sunday or Monday.
  • It is currently 01:00 local time in Japan and President Biden's schedule tomorrow is packed with G7 engagements and a re-scheduled Quad summit. Time becoming increasingly limited for direct discussions between Biden and his team in Washington.
  • Note: Biden is under increasing pressure from Congressional Democrats to limit policy concessions made the GOP.
  • Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) tweeted a moment ago: "[Biden] waited months before agreeing to negotiate with [House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)] on a spending deal. They are the only two who can reach an agreement. It is past time for the White House to get serious. Time is of the essence."
  • Former President Donald Trump posted on social media a short time ago: "Republicans should not make a deal on the debt ceiling unless they get everything they want... Do not fold."
