Biden Says He "Hopes" Navalny's Death Will Compel GOP To Pass Ukraine Aid

US

US President Joe Biden, speaking to reporters in Delaware, says he "hopes" the death of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny will convince House Republicans to approve new aid for Ukraine.

  • Biden says, when asked if Navalny’s death will make a difference on Republicans re: the Senate-passed foreign aid package: “I hope so, but I'm not sure..."
  • Biden adds he'd, "be happy to meet with [House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA)] if he has anything to say.”
  • Asked if Republicans would have, "blood on their hands" if they fail to legislate new aid, Biden replies: “I wouldn’t use that term, but they’re making a big mistake by not responding. They way they’re walking away from the threat of Russia, the way they’re walking away from NATO. They way they're walking away from meeting our obligations. It's just shocking... I've never seen anything like it."
  • On the prospect of new Russia sanctions, Biden says: "We already have sanctions, but we are considering additional sanctions, yes."
  • With the House of Representatives on scheduled recess until late next week, it is unclear when the chamber could next consider the foreign aid bill. Johnson hinted in a statement over the weekend that he may soften his position on Ukraine aid: “As Congress debates the best path forward to support Ukraine, the United States, and our partners, must be using every means available to cut off Putin’s ability to fund his unprovoked war in Ukraine and aggression against the Baltic states.”
