Biden Says He Will Veto Any Republican Legislation That Reaches His Desk

US President Joe Biden, speaking at an event to commemorate Martin Luther King Day, has said he is "ready to work with the new Republican House to make progress for the people of America."

  • Biden says he was disappointed to see the first bill brought to the floor by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was, "to help big corporations and the wealthy cheat on their taxes at the expense of middle class taxpayers."
  • Biden continued, "Republicans introduced another bill on the strategic petroleum reserve, blocking action that would help lower gasoline prices and help consumers."
  • Bipartisan legislation is considered unlikely for the next two years of this Congress and Biden follow his comments on cooperating with the Republican House by stating categorically that he will veto any Republican legislation that ends up on his desk.
  • Ipsos published a report this morning showing that Americans are pessimistic at the chance of bipartisan cooperation. Ipsos: “Coming out of a tumultuous start for the new Congress... most Americans anticipate gridlock in Congress for the next two years and expect the uncompromising and polarized nature of American politics to continue.”
